Are you a Tornado Roaring Through the Lives of Others?

Unmangabilty…Oy Vey! We can all relate…

“The alcoholic is like a tornado roaring his way through the lives of others.  Hearts are broken.  Sweet relationships are dead.   Affections have been uprooted.  Selfish and inconsiderate habits have kept the home in turmoil.  We feel a man is unthinking when he says that sobriety is enough.  He is like the farmer who came up out of his cyclone cellar to find his home ruined.  To his wife, he remarked, “Don’t see anything the matter here, Ma.  Ain’t it grand the wind stopped blowin’?” “Alcoholics Anonymous” (AA’s Big Book) Chapter 6, ‘Into Action,’ pg. 82

Every time I read this paragraph I laugh. The language is so funny, but it really is true and serious how the addict will destroy the lives of others. Just getting sober isn’t always enough.

Do I think I know what’s best for everyone? Am I the actor who wants to run the whole show who is forever trying to arrange the lights, the ballet, the scenery and the rest of the players in your own way? Do you believe that everybody, including yourself, would be pleased and that life would be wonderful if only they would do as you say? Can you sometimes be quite virtuous, kind, considerate, patient, generous, even modest and self-sacrificing and yet at other times be mean, egotistical, selfish and dishonest?
